Graduate Teacher Training Programme (GTP)

The GTP is an employment-based route designed to help mature people with considerable experience of working with children or young people. This could be experience gained in an education setting, (such as teaching assistants, further education teachers or those without teaching qualifications who have been working in independent schools) or as youth workers or play leaders, who would otherwise be unable to train as teachers.

Are you eligible for GTP please click here to check (doc format).

We are looking for potential teachers who:

  • Have a degree (or the equivalent) in a relevant subject*
  • Have Maths and English GCSE (or the equivalent), (also Science if you hope to teach Primary)*
  • Have recent, relevant experience of inner-city schools, preferably in Newham
  • Can demonstrate that they have the potential to teach in a diverse, exciting environment, committed to raising educational achievement

*Qualifications gained overseas must be accompanied by Naric certification. Please see www.naric.org.uk for more information.

We receive a great number of applications, so priority is given to:

  • Candidates who already have a school to train them
  • Candidates who are already working in Newham schools
  • Have recent, relevant experience of inner-city schools, preferably in Newham
  • Candidates with a high level of school experience
  • Candidates who reflect the diverse nature of our borough

Secondary Schools work with University of East London and the Institute of Education for GTP. Candidates must secure the support of a School before applying. Most Schools prefer to already know candidates before agreeing to support them. This is usually via previous employment or longstanding volunteer relationships.

Secondary applicants are advised to contact heads of department or GTP co-ordinators by letter with a brief CV, offering to assist in lessons or teach on a voluntary basis, as well as asking to be considered for GTP. Emails and phone messages may not be viewed as favourably as a posted letter, and candidates should never visit schools without prior arrangement. Newham Secondary Schools most commonly work with the University of East London or with the Institute of Education. Candidates should discuss the preferred training provider with the employing School.

For School addresses please see List of Schools
